Genre et expériences carcérales et/ou post-carcérales : processus de stigmatisation des femmes dans les prisons sénégalaises

Abstract : This thesis analyses the process of stigmatization of women who have passed through Senegalese jails. It is part of a comprehensive and interactionist approach to attempt to understand, based on women's prison and post-prison experiences, the continuities and ruptures related to their biography. The analysis of their longitudinal pathways through a survey in and out of detention confirmed our hypothesis that all prisoners are stigmatized, but women are much more affected because of the social and cultural expectations concerning them. The ethnographic investigation, within the two women's prisons and two other correctional facilities, revealed the invisibility of women in these institutions, all inherited from the colonial era, designed by and for men. Women, "forgotten" in the prison system, live in full isolation and constant idleness (lack of real training) that hinders their social and economic reintegration. This lack of support is compounded by the weight of society's stigmatizing gaze. The quantitative survey on social representations showed the differentiated way Senegalese people view detainees in the face of prison ordeal. And interviews with about 50 ex-prisoners, in addition to women prisoners, revealed three types of stigmatization: previous mortification, moral dilemma and shame. This typology varies according to the moral relationship to the offence, the relationship to the family and the strongest moment of stigmatization. While some women manage to reverse their stigma, often through exile, others remain convicted of their prison past.
