Etude phylogéographique d'une espèce vulnérable, le Murin de Capaccini (Myotis capaccinii Bonaparte, 1837) et stratégies de conservation des populations résiduelles

Abstract : The study carried out on the Capaccini murine showed the usefulness of genetic markers to answer certain questions linked to the history of the species and to a lesser extent, to its biology. The presence of the Capaccini Murin is ancient in the Mediterranean without a region of origin being possible. The populations present around the basin are divided into two very distinct genetically distinct subsets, so much so that one might think that a process of speciation is underway, but the genetic divergences are lower than those usually observed between two species (with several notable examples). Each of these East and West groups shows a strong structuring of populations in connection with the Pleistocene climatic crises (ФST = 0.88). The interpretation of the results made it possible to detect two or even three refuge areas. The first in the East is centered on Montenegro (Greece has not been sampled and represents a good candidate for one or more refuge zones). The second is centered on Provence and the third, not precisely determined, could be located in Spain or North Africa. The absence of brutal demographic expansion at the level of refuge populations is an interesting element with regard to its dynamics of colonization. The probably weak natural demographic dynamics of the species does not favor a recolonization of space by demographic explosion of the refuge populations. The most plausible explanation is colonization step by step or by hopping and setting up in a favorable sector. This interpretation is supported by the fact that populations far from the sea generally have a low diversity of genes related to a founder effect (H between 0 for populations whose distribution is marginal and 0.89 for a coastal population) . The genetic data testify to the philopatry of the species. The phylogeography of the species makes it possible to define conservation and management units at the scale of the Mediterranean basin.
