La représentation des grands ensembles allemands et français par leurs habitants : une étude comparative sociologique et culturelle.

Abstract : The central subject of this thesis is the perception of French and German council estates (ie. “Großwohnsiedlungen” in German, “grands ensembles“ in French) among the residents. This study is the result of a four month participant observation and 50 semi-structured interviews have been conducted in Le Val d’Argent near Paris and Gropiusstadt in Berlin. During the interviews the inhabitants have been asked about the self-perception and the representation they have of the prevalent media depiction. For a better comprehension of the territorial representations we compared the statements of the inhabitants from both countries. After analysing these data we came to the conclusion that the image of French banlieues is more problematic than the German one because of macro-societal differences between France and Germany in the perceptions of citizenship, nation and multi-culturalism.
