Etude d’une architecture radio-sur-fibre pour le fronthaul 5G

Abstract : The 5th generation (5G) ongoing standardization work is focusing on the design of a high performance radio access network (RAN) able to overcome the limitations of existing standards and supporting specific radio services required on the network. The 5G RAN is designed to support distributed architecture where some of the core network functions are moved to base stations which become more autonomous and allow signal processing split between several units for a flexible deployment.Data transmission to these remote units may be performed using multiple technologies. The aim of this thesis is the study of the performance of radio-over-fiber technology for 5G waveforms transmission to the remote units providing radio coverage to mobile users. Using electrical circuit modelling of photonic devices, analog characterization of the proposed radio-over-fiber link is conducted for performance evaluation and system parameters optimization. Phase modulation with interferometric detection is pointed in detail as it is a very attractive radio-over-fiber technique for the desired application. For an end to end assessment of the proposed radio-over-fiber system, an experimental study backed by simulation is performed by transmitting 5G-type waveforms over the downlink and uplink and comparing obtained results to 5G requirements defined in the standard. Optimal operation dynamic range have been obtained revealing promising performance of radio-over over fiber transport technology for 5G RAN
