Influence des informations sensorimotrices sur les représentations de l’espace. : Approche située et incarnée de la mémoire spatiale

Abstract : This Ph.D thesis aims to provide a better understanding of how sensorimotor information contributes to the representation of a place in memory, and influences its metric properties. Our hypothesis is that body-related information specifically contributes to adjusting the metric properties of the spatial representation, by modulating the values of inter-locations angles and distances stored in memory. We choose to support an embodied and situated view, which promotes the integration of ecological theoretical models in order to assemble better knowledge about spatial memory mechanisms. In order to support our integrative view on spatial representations, we imagined several research protocols involving spatial learning in which sensorimotor information could have been made available or altered, and we observed the consequences of these manipulations on various tasks including the recall of spatial coordinates on the map. Our results emphasize the effect of physical effort anticipation processes linked with locomotion on the encoding of large-scale spatial metric properties. They also provide new elements in regards to action capabilities perception in a peripersonal space, and its effect on the properties of spatial representations. Theoretical implications of this work underline how the parameters of the representations are dependent task demands during encoding: activities and goals shape the representation depending on the needs of the body, in interaction with a specific context.
