La commémoration des victimes homosexuelles du nazisme : Berlin, Paris, Amsterdam

Abstract : The aim of my PhD is to analyse the phenomenon of recognition of the homosexual victims of Nazism through their commemoration in Berlin, Paris and Amsterdam. The central questions of this research are: 1°) how the commemoration of the homosexual victims of Nazism has been strategically used to unify different kind of people through a common “we” and 2°) how the commemoration has been strategically deployed to obtain their recognition? In order to answer these questions, I first reconstructed the commemorated event. The second part of the research is devoted to three case studies. In Berlin, the commemorative phenomenon is analysed throughout the time. After a first moment, consisting in marking “authentic” places, “memory activists” invest new symbolical places which are meaningful for the contemporary gay and lesbian communities. Unlike Germany, where collective mobilisations aim to realise commemorative monuments, the reason of the collective mobilisation in France is the inclusion of the homosexual into public commemorative rituals. In Amsterdam, I observed the transition from a private group memory to a public one constituted from rituals and memorials. The Homomonument (inaugurated in 1987) is the first commemorative monument for the homosexual victims of Nazism worldwide. They are commemorated every year there. In conclusion, this research shows the commemoration of the victims of Nazism, as observed in Berlin, Paris and Amsterdam, shows that, by means of this ritual, gay activists are looking for the confirmation of their virility (manliness).
