The study area covers 24 countries of the Mediterranean basin, All the countries are involved in International Waterbirds Census (except the Occupied Palestinian Territory) and all are contracting parties of the Ramsar Convention, 2013.

, Bird counts in the countries of the study area were provided by the International Waterbird Census (IWC), coordinated by Wetlands International. One counting session per year per wetland occurred in mid-January by volunteers or professionals, 2005.

. African-eurasian-migratory and . Waterbirds,

, A total of 3 704 sites in 24 countries from the Mediterranean basin were used, totalling 156.2 million birds in 37

, Among the 382 Ramsar sites localized in the Mediterranean region, only 375 were used in this study: Malta (2 sites), Andorra (3 sites), Monaco (1 site) and the English part of Cyprus (1 site) are not included in our study area. We used the two specific Ramsar criteria design for birds to localize the wetlands of international importance. Waterbirds criteria are used for wetlands regularly supporting: 20 000 or more waterbirds (criterion 5) or 1% of the individuals in a population of one species or subspecies of waterbirds (criterion 6). Consequently, criterion 5 was attributed to sites hosting regularly (>50% of time) 20 000 waterbirds. For the criterion 6, because it refer to waterbirds populations size, we used the most recent biogeographical populations assessment used for the 7° AEWA Conservation Status References AEWA, For 37 of the 382 Mediterranean Ramsar sites, we manually performed Ramsar site delimitation thanks to Ramsar site sheet because site delimitation was incomplete of the online database, 2015.
