Modélisation et caractérisation expérimentale de l’influence de l’émission électronique sur le fonctionnement des propulseurs à courant de Hall

Abstract : Plasma-wall interaction in Hall Thrusters is today an important topic of research for plasma physics scientific community and space industry. Until today, the interactions between the plasma and the thruster walls have been considered on a simplified manner, although it is proved experimentally that Hall Thruster channel material has a non-negligible impact on global plasma behaviour. In particular electron emission phenomenon (i.e. the emission of electrons from a wall submitted to an incident electrons flow) has been modelled on a simplistic way in Hall thrusters models. It is suspected that this phenomenon could have a major impact on electrons transport. Firstly, in order to highlight electron emission influence on global Hall thruster plasma behaviour, a detailed model of electron emission based on a thorough literature review was created. In a second part, this model was validated by comparison to experimental data extracted from literature and carried out during the PhD. on materials characteristic of Hall thruster wall. In a third part, this detailed electron emission model was introduced in particle simulation of Hall thruster plasma in order to evaluate its influence on global plasma characteristics. This PhD. allowed highlighting a non-negligible influence of electron emission on Hall thruster plasma behaviour. In particular, some properties of electron emission, such as emitted electron angular distribution and emitted electron energy distribution, which have only been considered on a simplistic manner, show a major influence on Hall thruster plasma.
