Charlotte écoute un max. Première formulation scientifique d'une sociologie-écoute

Abstract : Where does listening stand today? Since the beginning of the 20th century, with the development of telephony, radio and recording techniques, the definition of listening has been the same: pay attention to what reaches our ears. However, is consulting your Twitter feed part of listening, when there is nothing to hear? When the young woman Charlotte communicates in writing on her smartphone, in conversational practices that last several hours, does she listen? One would be tempted to answer positively, yet this simple fact is only slightly reflected in scientific research on listening. The latter seems to be satisfied, even satisfied, with a sonic acceptance of the notion, most often confining it to Sound Studies, Media Studies or Communications. Because of the digital context, does listening change? How can sociology look at the object-listening? How can listening contribute to the practice of sociology and its renewal? What would be the consequences of new forms of listening on the reflective practice of sociologists? What is "listening" to its purpose? The working hypothesis is as follows: if listening is no longer (or is less) sonic, it nevertheless continues to move on the properties of sound, namely the methexic properties. The scientific strategy is then deployed in three parts. The first part consists in going back upstream of the notion, to the encounter of listening (the profession) of the 12th century, the sister listens in cloistered monasteries who listens to conversations in parlours and brings them back to the Mother Superior, the doctor "auscultateur" or the écornifleur (in French from Québec) who "listens at the doors". The second part of the scientific strategy consists of developing tactics, crossing, and bypass points in order to go beyond the sound perception of listening. The thesis thus extends to territories such as the library, the office, the theatre stage or the mural-graffiti. The third part of the strategy consists of working on the dimensions of listening: doing research "on" listening as much as research "to" listening, and "with" listening. This is what is referred to in the thesis as "sociologie-écoute" (Listening Sociology in English). Theoretical and methodological, this doctoral research leads, following the form of the listening node (a marine node), which holds the thesis as much as it gives it the possibility of being easily and quickly undone, to a contemporary listening re-thought and re-viewed. Envisaged in its floating, its reading of differences, its distribution and its virality, the future of Listening Sociology looks promising.
