D'après Koestler, le calembour consiste en la « bisociation d'une forme phonétique à deux sens, deux courants de pensée qui se rejoignent dans un conduit acoustique. 179 » D'autres exemples de bisociation sont présents chez Donne, en particulier dans les satires ou épigrammes, ces courts textes destinés à faire montre d'un trait d'esprit rapidement.
