This doctoral dissertation analyses the social processes enabling women to access historically male-dominated positions. Drawing on the sociology of gender, music, education and work, it explores women’s entry into the world of traditional music instrumentalists in Greece. Based on biographical interviews, archives, institutional sources and quantitative data, the dissertation shows that feminization over the past thirty years has been fuelled by two processes: the formalization of instrumental learning, particularly in the school system, and the expansion of employment opportunities in the field of traditional music revival. These transformations have produced a reconfiguration of gendered practices and representations and a normalization of women instrumentalists’ trajectories. However, as a minority in a male-dominated artistic world, women can maintain their musical practice only under certain conditions. They need to gather resources and deal with gender constraints to achieve success. By analysing the evolution of learning forms and musical worlds, this thesis thus contributes to understanding the mechanisms of production of gender relations in the artistic labour market.
Cette thèse interroge les processus sociaux d’accès des femmes aux positions historiquement réservées aux hommes. En mobilisant la sociologie du genre, de la musique, de l’éducation et du travail, elle analyse l’entrée des femmes dans le monde des instrumentistes de musique traditionnelle en Grèce. À partir d’entretiens biographiques, d’archives, de sources institutionnelles et de données quantitatives, la thèse montre que la féminisation ces trente dernières années s’est appuyée sur deux processus : la formalisation de l’apprentissage instrumental, en particulier dans un cadre scolaire, et l’essor des opportunités d’emploi dans le milieu du renouveau de la musique traditionnelle. Ces transformations ont produit des reconfigurations des pratiques et représentations sexuées et une banalisation des trajectoires de femmes instrumentistes. Mais minoritaires dans un monde artistique dominé par les hommes, les femmes ne peuvent se maintenir dans la pratique musicale que sous conditions. Elles doivent cumuler des ressources et négocier les contraintes de genre pour parvenir à s’imposer. Analysant les évolutions des formes d’apprentissage et des mondes musicaux, cette thèse contribue ainsi à saisir les mécanismes de production des rapports de genre dans le marché du travail artistique.
