Analyser la prosodie musicale du punk, du rap et du ragga français (1977-1992) à l'aide de l'outil informatique

Abstract : From the moment they appeared, French punk, rap and ragga music distinguished themselves from the French song which remains intimately linked to singing. Indeed, at the heart of those three styles, vocal expression is closer to speaking than singing, and shows itself to be more rhythmical than melodic. Because there are few harmonic relations between the voice and the instruments, because of the speed of vocal rhythms and the absence of score, those musical styles are resistant to traditional musical analysis tools. In this context, analyzing musical prosody conceived as the sum of the rules regarding the relationship of quantities, stress and intensity between the syllables of the lyrics and the musical beats appears suitable as it is adapted to the scarcity or even absence of melodiousness in the vocal phrasings. Our initial hypothesis is that it constitutes a central element of characterization and differentiation of those styles. The aim of this thesis is to offer an analysis method for musical prosody based on the acoustic content of recordings. In order to do so, we use IT tools and more specifically softwares for the processing and analysis of sound developed by the Musical Representations and the Sound Analysis Synthesis Ircam teams. Thus, Audiosculpt and OpenMusic have allowed for the extraction of data from the musical prosody as well as the production of representations adapted to its analysis. After the presentation of our method, we apply it to some characteristic pieces of French punk, rap and ragga. Thanks to the highlighting of the specific prosodico- musical features of the three styles, we show the relevance of musical prosody analysis to differentiate and characterize popular music styles using phrasings closer to speaking than to singing.
