Machiavelli between order and conflict

Abstract : In the last decades or so, Discourses on Livy has become the book where Machiavelli theorizes that political freedom is a result of social conflict. An increasing number of scholars have argued, and argue, that this issue has to be taken as one of Machiavelli’s major contributions to political thought. What our thesis tries to demonstrate is that this statement has no real textual basis. And the reason is – we argue - that when you have a very close and deep look on the Discourses, you have to recognize that it’s not clear at all what Machiavelli thinks about social conflict, as he comes out with so many contradictory statements on the subject that make it impossible to talk of any kind of a theory.
