H. <1, Using the surgeons as a random effect in mixed-effect models made it possible to control for the confounding effect of potential differences in practices among surgeon. The variance of the random effects for the models predicting observed LOS was 0.28, and expected LOS, 0.42. For Model 1 and Model 2, we checked the assumption of proportional hazards by graphical examination of the survival functions and by graphical examination of the distribution of the residuals For Model 3, we verified the normal distribution of the model residuals and the homoscedasticity of the errors. Results refer to multiple imputed datasets. We preliminarily verified the missing-atrandom assumption by creating a dummy variable (value present vs value missing) and computing correlations between this and all other variables. The absence of any patterns of correlations can be interpreted as verification of the missing-at-random assumption. Independent predictors were not changed when HADS-A and HADS-D were used as continuous instead of categorical variables
