Variability of the Great Whirl from observations and models, Deep-Sea Res, pp.1279-1295, 2001. ,
Marked are the Southern Gyre, Great Whirl and Socotra Gyre or Socotra Eddy. Near-surface salinities (color-coded on the current vectors) indicate that lower-salinity waters originating from the southwestern and upwelling regions recirculate in the Great Whirl and do not leave the Somali Current zone toward the east in the 4 o -12 o N latitude belt. Instead, outflow from the northern Somali Current during the summer monsoon occurs through the Socotra passage. Note also that the GW in 1995 was located much more northerly, against the banks of southern Socotra, p.96, 1993. ,
