Evaluation et représentation des enjeux environnementaux dans une perspective de transitions écologique et énergétique

Abstract : According to several recent scientific articles, some planetary boundaries have already been overstepped and crossing certain biophysical thresholds could have disastrous consequences for humanity. This risk appeals to important changes, at short and longer terms, within our ways of behaving and living. In this global context, environmental assessment is considered as a way of constructing new representations of environmental issues to make people consider ecological issues. With this in mind, we endeavor to develop environmental assessment tools that do not rely on the substitutability assumption between natural and man-made capital. Our research projects are situated at the interface between macro-environmental assessment tools (at the scale of Nations) and the micro-level of the organization. The environmental accounting methods that are developed use consumption-based approaches. Thus, they do not only consider direct emissions of the system under study but also its indirect impacts. Based on intervention research approach, they aim to help decision-makers to increase their decision criteria in order to make them aware and identify the environmental impacts of their activity in view to optimize them. To answer to the needs of their users, the accounting methods that are developed rely on various methodologies: risk analysis, qualitative indicators-based assessment, multi-criteria analysis, life cycle assessment and ecological footprint. Environmental assessment implies to search for a double equilibrium between, on one hand, normative versus constructive approach, and on the other hand, between scientific precision and completeness versus simplicity of results that is expected by the potential users. It also involves an interdisciplinary approach, based on intervention research, which will be discussed to present some “tricks of the trade” that guide our research methodology. Our research perspectives endeavor to propose environmental accounting methods to help decision makers with the aim of ecological and energy transitions. These perspectives are structured around three axes: •The first research axis aims at applying environmental accounting methods to new complex systems •The second axis aims at improving existing environmental assessment tools in view of a better reflection and decision aid. •The third research axis proposes an upstream reflection about the choice of new indicators that appear necessary with the aim of transition. The originality of these indicators could rely as well as within their definition than their presentation. •At least, some transversal tracks of reflection are opened to question the relationships between time, speed, acceleration and sustainability.
