Les élites maliennes en quête d’Amérique : Migrations internationales pour études et enjeux d’une reproduction sociale inachevée

Abstract : This work explores student migrations within elite families in Mali. In particular, examining North America, which constitutes as an understudied destination of Malian international migrations. This study shows that academic mobility to the United States and Canada are appealing to the elites and more generally are part of a lifestyle turned towards the foreign environment. Nevertheless, back in Mali, obtaining North American degrees does not guarantee social reproduction among the members of elite families. Though studying outside of Mali may allow for the students to stay in Canada or the United States, this study highlights that working for the Malian State, which remains the best way to accumulate money in Mali, is based upon more ambiguous criteria. This research deploys several methological techniques targeting a variety of places: a questionnaire was administered in Bamako, while qualitative fieldwork was conducted in Mali, Canada and the United States.
