Abstract : The increase of bandwitdh available modified the conception of image representation standards. It is now interesting to define standards that offer a large range of services, even if they have a lower compression rate. my consisted of transposing in the compressed domain the local description techniques used in many visual applications. Scalable compression and description both require a prior image transformation in a scale-space. Nevertheless, critical sampling transformations like the ones used in the JPEG2000 standard are strongly variant to similarities and so not adapted to description. Redundant transformations are thus investigated. Among those, directional representations have a particular interest since they allow to transpose the SIFT descriptor which is the current reference in the field. The robustness of the descriptor is evaluated with rspect to the compression rate. The method is validated in a problem of automatic copy deetction in the compressed domain.
