CONTRIBUTION A L'ETUDE DE LA RUPTURE DES GRAINS DANS LES MATERIAUX GRANULAIRES

Abstract : In this work, we study the mechanical behaviour of crushable granular materials under quasi-static loading. It is well known that the higher the breakage ratio, the higher the material compressibility and the lower the peak shear strength. The source of this phenomenon is the brittle fracture of individual grains and their micro-mechanical loading conditions. Thus, recent works have focused on multiscale methods in order to predict the behaviour of the granular assembly. However, the subject is still open and therefore in this work we provide more empirical evidence, we validate existing models and we develop new predictive methods. Multiscale links are established here by describing, firstly, the mechanical properties of individual grains according to Weibull's theory. Secondly, assumptions about the inter-granular contact forces network allows for changing scale and predicting the grading after crushing and the shear strength decreasing due to size effects. We have also studied the influence of water and time (creep-relaxation) in crushable materials under various stress paths, showing that the relationship between the breakage ratio and the plastic work depends only on intrinsic parameters. Perspectives of this work are to couple the predictive methods developed here with constitutive models, in order to take into account the micro-mechanical properties in continuous models.
