Modélisation de l'hydrologie continentale et influences de l'irrigation sur le cycle de l'eau

Abstract : The evolution of the population growth on Earth and the geographical concentration of the request in food by the populations ask many questions concerning the perpetuity of the fresh water taken for agriculture by irrigation. It tries to mitigate the hydric deficit of the crops but implies on the other hand water consumptions. Does irrigation have an impact on the continental water balance? We tested the capacity of the land surface model SECHIBA, forced at high-resolution, to simulate two major components of water cycle which can be impacted by the irrigation: soil moisture and streamflows. A study of sensibility of vegetation parameters which impact soil moisture, showed the major effect of the water extraction by the roots simulated by SECHIBA. Furthermore, the comparison with observations showed satisfying results of simulated soil moisture seasonnality. The second study concerned the functioning of the water routing module which transports water through rivers towards the ocean in SECHIBA. We showed the necessity of the change of routing time step when we forced the model at high-resolution over the Mississipi river sub-basins. A realistic computation of the irrigation requirement simulated by SECHIBA was implemented and tested. The impact of the irrigation on the water balance simulated by SECHIBA-LMDZ can be different according to the regions of the globe. Irrigation contributes to an increase of precipitation over the dry region of this basin while the wet region does not present variations. Irrigation weakens the release of the indian monsoon through the decrease of the " continental surface-sea " thermal gradient leading less precipitations in summer.
