Conséquences de l'anémie maternelle sur le jeune enfant de la naissance à 18 mois de vie

Abstract : Our goal was to study the consequences of anaemia during pregnancy on infants during their first 18 months of life in Southern Benin. In the first project, we showed that maternal anemia was neither associated with low birth weight nor with prematurity. Nevertheless, children born from anemic mother presented a significantly higher risk to be anemic at birth. Using a linear mixed model, our results also show that there is no association between an infant's hemoglobin level in the first 18 months and maternal anemia. Using latent class analysis on the same data, we identified two distinct haemoglobin level trajectories during the first 18 months of life. This strategy allows us to show that newborn anaemia and placental malaria were significantly associated with a lower infant's haemoglobin level over time. We also showed that maternal anaemia was a predictor for 'low haemoglobin level trajectory' group membership. The second project studies the impact of maternal anaemia on children's development in Benin. The Mullen Scales of Early Learning were designed to assess child development. It has never been used in Benin. This tool was been modified substantially and was been used to assess infants cognitive development at 12 months of age. The first step was to check its use in one year old Beninese infants, a Francophone country. We found that Mullen composite score was associated with some risk factors for poor child development such as maternal intellectual quotient, family socio economic status, quality and quantity of stimuli available in the children home environment, children nutrition, male gender and maternal education
