La prévention des troubles musculo-squelettiques en conception : quelles marges de manœuvre pour le déploiement de l'activité ?

Fabien Coutarel
Abstract : The main objective of the research is to give evidence to the influence of an increase in operators' and managers' room for manoeuvre, on the prevention of work related musculoskeletal disorders (WMSD) as well as in production effectiveness. An ergonomic intervention was carried out in the design phase of a new carving line in a duck slaughterhouse. It is based on participatory project management, as developed by activity-centred ergonomics, as well as on the recent development of WMSD research. Through discussion of biomedical approaches to WMSD and several epistemological views on health developed in the human sciences, the author proposes a theoretical frame that considers WMSD as one of the symptoms of a more global organizational malfunctioning, where insufficient room for manoeuvre does not allow the stakeholders to cope with the variability they encountered in production. Since WMSD prevention has mainly progressed through feedback on the effects of field interventions, this work questions the epistemological framework of research on practice, in which the author places himself. The theses proposed are defended through a retrospective analysis of the two-year long intervention, including a formal assessment of the project.
