Recherche des périodicités astronomiques et des fluctuations du niveau marin à partir de l'étude du signal carbonaté des séries pélagiques alternantes : application au Crétacé inférieur du Sud-Est de la France (Bassin vocontien), de l'Atlantique central ( site 534 DSDP) et du golfe du Mexique ( site 535 DSDP)

Abstract : The Lower Cretaeeous marl-limestone alternations of the DSDP Sites 534 (Central Atlantic) and 535 (gulf of Mexico) and of the Vocontian trough (SE France) representing variations in carbonate productivity are chosen as the framework for a study of carbonate content fluctuations. The goal of the present work is to demonstrate : - the connection between cyclie variations in carbonate content and astronomical parameters (Iower Cretaceous of the Vocotian trough) ; - the connection between relative variations of sedimentary linear fluxes and sea level fluctuations (Iower Cretaceous of the DSDP Sites 534, 535 and of the Vocontian trough ). For this, two specifie methods have been developed : spectral analysis and image analysis. Spectral analysis of carbonate content for the Berriasian-Barremian interval in the Vocontian trough, reveal : the presence of significant carbonate cycles linked to cyc!ic variations of the Earth's orbit. The results suggest that the obliquity cycle is the most clearly delined signal; the transition from limestone-dominated alternations to marl-dominaned alternations is characterized both by an increase in sedimentation rate and a change from the precession cycle being the dominant forcing factor in the calcareous part to the predominance of the obliquity cycle in the marly part. Image analysis was made from black and white core photographs. For deep-sea sediments containing high-frequency sedimentary cycles as sequences of DSDP site 534 and site 535, this processing appears as a relatively rapid and easy method, the sole available with this accuracy to determine the relative variations of Iinear sedimentary fluxes for pre-quaternary successions. The terrestrial vocontian succession investigated with this processing was not successful. By comparing the .data in the DSDP sites, it is possible to detect common (eustacy, climate) and local factors (tectonic) which have controlled the matenal fluxes.
