Relations d'affaires franco-nigérianes : l'émergence de configurations sociales et commerciales internationales - Échange, incertitude et stratégies identitaires

Abstract : This PhD aims at seizing the social, political and economic dynamics of the Franco-Nigerian commercial exchange through analyzing the relationships between directors and executives of French and Nigerian companies. Several aspects structure the context of the commercial relationships: the specific historical and political relation between Nigeria and France, the uncertainty of the business environment in Nigeria, violence, insecurity as well as the national and cultural pluralism of economic actors. A structure of opportunities emerges from this context and closely interacts with actors' individual paths and motivations. Eventually, the resulting social forms and daily interactions reciprocally influence the exchange's context and rules. Actors take advantage of the context's "constraints", relying on both personal resources and on seizing the venues of the context. They construct social configurations and organizations that facilitate commercial activity and exchange, making them less risky, wealth-generating and durable, at least to a certain extent. These organizations and hierarchical mechanisms can be found at three main levels: 1) Whereas the international economic elites scrutinized here do not constitute a social group per se, 2) they set out social configurations linked with the commercial activities. These configurations are flexible, little institutionalized, diverse, characterized by a lot of intermediaries and based on both commercial contracts and conventions. 3) Professional interactions between the international executives indicate more particularly the power and domination relationships structuring commercial exchange. At each of these levels financial interests can be considered the main cause of initial interaction and often also for the maintenance of relationships between actors, but other social mechanisms are also relevant: this concerns mainly categorizations and hierarchies based on nationality and origin paired with socio-professional status. These categorizations introduce divides and conflicts in the economic cooperation.
