Evaluation de l'impact d'un centre de stockage de déchets sur la qualité de l'air : approche par méthodes statistiques et modélisation déterministe

Abstract : Municipal Solid Waste (MSW) landfills may lead to strong impacts on air quality in surrounding communities. However these impacts remain difficult to assess with tools that are commonly used to study air pollution. It could be explained by specificities peculiar to MSW landfills: the source (area, passive, sometimes located in a complex terrain ...), the type of pollution (odour) and the scale in space and time of the phenomenon (short peaks of pollution located closed to the source). After having highlighted links between meteorological conditions and air quality, three tools have been successively developed and tested to assess this pollution: * A wind tunnel to quantify emissions: the principal disadvantage of this tool currently used is the strong dependence of the results with conditions of measurements and hood shape. A model using Fluent software has been created to simulate soil/air exchanges and flows inside different hood shapes in order to assess the reliability of the measurements depending of the type of tunnel. * A dispersion model: the full meteorological model ARPS (Advanced Regional Prediction System) was coupled to an eulerian dispersion model in order to simulate local meteorology and pollutants dispersion with a high resolution (100 m). The model was tested and validated on a landfill site located in a complex terrain for weather conditions favourable to pollution events. * A tool to quantify population exposure: this tool uses Geographical Information System (GIS) software to assess population exposure by superimposition of maps of pollution plume (obtained from the second step) and maps of population density. The global method composed by the previous steps leads to an accurate assessment of population exposure to MSW landfill sites: it takes into account meteorological conditions and long-term modification of the terrain.
