La librairie et le crédit. Réseaux et métiers du livre à Paris (1830-1870)

Abstract : Studying Parisian booksellers through the bankruptcies they underwent sheds light on their finance networks. Drawing on the methods of corporate demography, prosopography and network analysis, this study shows how changes in book production translated into the spread of bookshops throughout Paris and the opening of credit accounts at banks. Whereas rates of occupational endogamy go down together with internal financing, commercial money-lending between professionals, dominant until then, tends from mid-century onwards to pass into the hands of local banks. The activity of the latter nonetheless is closely linked with that of public institutions, whether centralized or not. The reason for these bankers' success is that they themselves started their careers in the book trade, where they first acquired social status. By specializing in finance, they hope to rise to the top of the national political and economic sphere. The analysis of booksellers' bankruptcies and their credit networks shows how a relatively localised economy where productive organisation takes its toll financially on the suppliers evolves. But this " chain of the book " is not the only factor in the professional hierarchy. The breadth and diversity of the booksellers' social space appear to be crucial elements in determining their relative position inside the professional community and society at large. This study is also an indirect contribution to the history of local banking.
