Abstract : This PhD thesis concerns the study of the required physical limits for the design of organic light-emitting diode at the smallest scale that is, a small number of atoms. We worked with several organic π-conjugated molecular systems to determine the essential needed criteria for a molecule to be used as such. In this context, the Scanning Tunneling Microscope is a particularly suitable tool for studying self-assembly of all these systems on a surface and for positioning with high precision the electrodes formed by the conductive tip and the substrate. The organization of three-dimensional tectons with a central pillar paracyclophane on graphite was first studied. They have, in the same molecular entity, all the functions required for the emission of photons: those for a structured organization through interactions with the substrate and those for an optoelectronical behaviour. The transition to a better suited for the enhancement by plasmons gold substrate was then examined. Another strategy for the organization of molecules based on a change in their nature and their length was applied with the use of oligophenylenes and poly (3-alkylthiophenes). Stability, which is the key parameter for the emission of photons under a tip, had to be improved on the same substrate and has motivated the development of a third architecture to consolidate the entire molecular structure. Chemisorbed thiols were deposited on gold and with superimposed fluorescent polymers by the creation of an electrostatic bond. The obtaining of a localized emission with such a system makes this work emphasizes that the main obstacle to the achievement of a diode of minimum size is the structural stability of its molecular constituents.
