Abstract : The comprehension of sensory perception requires studying the way the central nervous system gathers and processes the flow of sensory stimuli that continuously hit it. It is thus necessary to precisely characterize: 1) the exploratory strategies used by the rat to position its whiskers relatively to the environment and 2) the whisker preneuronal processing that produces a mechanical signal relevant to the mechanoreceptors located at the whisker base. In a first part, we found out that, for higher locomotion speed, whisking amplitude decreases and whiskers are more protracted. In a second part of the thesis, we compared theoretical predictions and experimental measurements to validate a model of whisker mechanical transduction. We thus described rapid dynamical events that subsequently occur after a shock onto an object. We also investigated the propagation of those deformation waves along the whisker, down to the follicle. In a last part, we measured and characterized texture-induced whisker oscillations during experiments where vibrissae sweep past topography-controlled texture. We replayed those whisker deformations and simultaneously recorded the neuronal activity in the somatosensory cortex. We showed that the envelope of whisker oscillations is correlated with the neuronal firing rate.
