Optimisation des techniques de codage pour les transmissions radio avec voie de retour

Abstract : In most wireless transmission systems, error control usually relies on hybrid ARQ protocols (HARQ) which combine a forward error correction (FEC) code with an automatic repeat request (ARQ) protocol. Many research efforts have focused on the important issue of efficient FEC design for HARQ. In this work, we propose a cross-layer optimization of HARQ protocols by jointly considering digital communications and protocol aspects. In conventional HARQ schemes referred to as Single-Packet (SP) HARQ, redundancy packets are relative to the same data packet. A major drawback of such schemes is that each retransmission may significantly reduce the average throughput when the packet size is fixed. To improve the average throughput, we propose a new approach called Multiple-Packets (MP) HARQ, which aims at reducing the average number of retransmissions per data packet by constructing redundancy packets that may help to decode several data packets in error. Compared to HARQ-SP schemes, this approach offers a significant throughput gain at medium to high signal to noise ratio (SNR). However, HARQ-SP remains more efficient at low SNR. We also show that MP schemes are more robust than SP schemes against feedback errors. These results lead us to introduce a hybrid combination of SP and MP. Theoretical analysis and simulation results show that the proposed hybrid SP/MP protocol realizes a good tradeoff between SP schemes and MP schemes over the whole SNR range.
