Langues et parcours d'intégration d'immigrés maghrébins en France

Abstract : Throughout the (socio)linguistic study of a group of about hundred migrants from Maghreb, this thesis deal with the languages and routes of integration of the persons. The different representations analysed show that the notions of "languages" or "dialects" are difficult to tackle without taking care of the identities/representations that are manifested or claimed according to the context. They also show that the "trouble" of identity due to the discrediting of non official languages encourages the adhesion toward supra local identities symbolized by emblematic single languages (monolingualistic ideal) and leads to linguistic insecurity. The different results also show that sex or gender are one of the important parameters that interfere in the relationship between the migrant, the new society and "its" language. The strong inequalities that often exist at the beginning (school, social network, work, etc.) are often reinforced by the life in the new society (linguistic insecurity, discriminations, etc.) and this is particularly true for women. The learning of the language of the land of immigration is more an affair of contact with the new society than a question of time spent in this society, but, these contacts are depending of the structure of social networks (social capital). Finally, in the case of a familial immigration, monolingualism or exclusive usage of the "mother tongue(s)" seems to reveal marginalisation or assimilation and, on the contrary, bilingualism shows integration.
