Caractérisation et modélisation in vitro de l'écosystème jéjuno-iléal du veau de boucherie

Abstract : In the veal calves industry, the European ban in January 2006 of all antibiotics used as growth promoters (AGPs) gave rise to research into new feed additives allowing i) to reach the same growth performances in animals and ii) the decrease of gastro-intestinal disorders frequency. The objective of this work was to set up a continuous in vitro system modelling the veal calf intestinal environment in order to screen a large number of additives. The main cultivable bacterial groups and major parameters of the biochemical composition of the jejuno-ileal chyme were first characterized in vivo. Then, a continuous in vitro system was set up and its nutritive medium was optimised. The three tested nutritive media led to the stabilization of the main numbered bacterial groups. Medium M3 was chosen for the following experiments as its biochemical composition was closest to that of the calf chyme and because it led to the lowest inter-trials variability. The model was then used in order to study the impact, on the intestinal microflora of the veal calf, of a feed additive : carvacrol. The results of this first trial were difficult to use as the antioxidant properies of carvacrol distorted their interpretation. Adding a molecule with greater antioxidant properties than carvacrol in the nutritive medium should enable the analysis of the impact of carvacrol on the microflora. Even if improvements remain to be made, the first results are promising. After in vitro screening and the selection of new feed additives liable to replace AGPs, in vivo experiments are needed to validate the interest of the substances selected in vitro. Indeed, in vitro modelling does not mimic all the phenomena occurring in vivo and remain a pre-screening tool up stream.
