Photodegradation of organic pollutants induced by iron-carboxylate complexes in aqueous solutions

Abstract : In this study the degradation of 2,4-D and atrazine photoinduced by the complex between the iron and EDDS was studied. We first characterized the physicochemical so complex in aqueous solution and assessed the rate of production of hydroxyl radicals under irradiation. Degradation of 2,4-D was also studied under irradiation in the presence of goethite with or without EDDS. Finally a comparison of the efficiency of photodegradation of atrazine between two iron complexes Fe-EDDS and Fe-pyruvic acid complete this thesis. In all parts of this work we have systematically studied the influence of various parameters such as pH and oxygen concentrations, iron complexes and organic compounds. The main conclusion of this work is that the complexes between iron and aminopolycarboxylic acids (EDDS) can play an important role in the transformation of organic matter present in aquatic compartments.
