Etude et optimisation de l'efficacité énergétique d'enseignes lumineuses sans mercure excitées en régime d'impulsions électriques

Abstract : This thesis presents results of research work carried out on pulsed neon xenon glow discharges to be used in replacement of mercury based signs for illuminated advertising or architectural lighting. Signs are formed by cold cathodes fluorescent tubes operating at high voltage. This distinguishes signs from common fluorescent tubes used in general lighting, which work with the same type of mixture, but at low voltage with preheated cathodes. This work has benefited from a partnership GREMI-ADEME- Region Centre-Aupem Sefli, and is motivated by a desire to propose a mercury-free technology for lighting purposes. Indeed, mercury is a toxic element which requires the development of efficient mercury recovery programs. Some basic mechanisms of the light production have been studied and better understood. This work has also permitted to optimize characteristics of neon-xenon signs in terms of illuminance, efficacy, and lifetime. At the end of this thesis, lifetime and efficacy of cold cathodes fluorescent tubes based on neon xenon pulsed discharge lie between those of incandescent lamps and those of mercury based fluorescent tubes. Possible prospects exist for further improving the luminous efficacy.
