Les horizons de la grande vitesse : Le TGV, une innovation lue à travers les mutations de son époque

Abstract : Analysis of transport/society relations is often tinged with determinism. There is however a new trend that considers that transport supply is a social produce before being an element of society transformation. In this sense the TGV is not a major innovation, but more a "technique put to use" which reduces the importance of the history of its emergence. High speed rail can thus be seen as a technical transport artefact, as a support to mobility habits and as vector of a collective imagination by analysing the way in which it fits into the social environment trends. This is the object of this thesis which is divided into 4 parts. Part 1 situates the TGV in a century-long history of ever-increasing speed in exchanges. It links this acceleration to a renewal process of multiple hierarchies structuring our social organisation. Part 2 ties high speed transport to three present-day macro-economic developments : the petering out of fordism which shows the birth of the TGV from a new perspective; the growing importance of information, which shows in productive activities as well as in a demand for faster transport; globalization, which is the current form of hierarchy renewal, in which the TGV plays a part. Part 3 looks into productive organisation from a temporal point of view. It leads to three dual structures : a productive system somewhere between autonomy/integration and flexible taylorism, a social time somewhere between divided time and industrial time, the use of high speed somewhere between necessity and opportunity. Part 4 deals with organisation in space. It shows how a metropolitan space is different and dominates a common space. It show how high speed is inscribed in the former through supply, clients structure and finally through the symbolic of town development policies. This approach shines a new light on the results of past observations and helps to understand the TGV's success and failures.
