Contribution au développement d'un prototype de superviseur de performance optique

Abstract : The trend in the evolution of optical networks is to evolve towards transparent networks. This transparency will bring additional flexibility to the optical layer with the use of components like Reconfigurable Optical Add-Drop Multiplexers (ROADM) and all-optical cross connects. These components will in turn enable the suppression of costly and energy-consuming opto-electrical conversions which are carried out at electrical nodes. On the downside, it becomes more difficult to monitor the quality of digital signals at intermediate points along the transmission links. A potential solution to this problem is to carry out Optical Performance Monitoring (OPM) of the optical channels whereby the optical characteristics are measured in order to estimate indirectly the quality of the digital signals. This thesis is basically devoted to the measurement of the Optical Signal-to-Noise Ratio (OSNR) which is a key parameter in the estimation of the Bit Error Rate (BER). The OSNR is conventionally measured by an out-of-band technique which is based on a linear interpolation method whereby the noise within an optical channel is estimated by the noise levels present in its immediate vicinity. However, this method is flawed in ROADM-based networks where optical channels experience narrow filtering. To overcome this problem, one interesting solution is to use an in-band method to evaluate directly the noise within the channel. A polarization-nulling method is applied to an OPM prototype to carry out in-band measurements of the OSNR.
