Etudes expérimentales et théoriques des conversions d'ondes sismo-électriques dans les milieux poreux superficiels

Abstract : Electrokinetic coupling phenomena created at the microscopic scale by the passage of seismic waves through fluid-saturated porous media generate conversions between seismic and electromagnetic energy which can be observed at the macroscopic scale. We have studied these coupling effects, both experimentally and theoretically, in order to assess their potential use for the detection and characterization of the fluid contents of superficial porous media. We first present a series of field experiments designed to record the transient electric fields generated by a seismic perturbation of the medium. These experiments were performed with a set of geophones and electric dipoles connected to a multichannel seismic acquisition system. After removal of the powerline noise by adaptive filtering, two different seismo-electric effects were identified: i) a dominant effect in the form of an electric field which accompanies and mimics the seismic waves, and ii), small-amplitude precursory electromagnetic disturbances showing a polarity reversaI on either side of the shot point, with little or no moveout along the receiver array. Next, we address the theoretical aspects of the coupled propagation of seismic and electromagnetic waves in saturated porous media by using the governing equations derived by Pride (1994), which combine the Biot theory and Maxwell equations via transport equations. We have implemented these equations in a numerical simulation code in order to generate synthetic seismograms, electrograms and magnetograms in stratified porous media. This numerical modeling code allowed us to perform detailed investigations of the seismo-electric effects, to interpret our field data, and to give prominence to the potential applications of a simultaneous recording of the seismic, electric and magnetic wavefields for the characterization of near-surface porous layers.
