Les fractales du sens

Abstract : This document is both an appraisal of about twenty years of research in the fields of English linguistics and translation studies - with topics as diverse as wordplay and cultural references in Asterix, interjection in discourse, numbers and enumerations or alternative questions - and a reflection on representation, the aim of which is also to sum up the various approaches adopted, based on an originally mathematical object, i.e. fractals. Fractals can be said to be a relevant tool when it comes to accounting for the nature of texts and linguistic operations. Starting from a review of the issues dealt with over the years, a dynamic representation of the organisation of meaning is presented with a movement from point to line to spin which represents the growing complexity of discourse and perception of reality. Thanks to repetition and self-similarity meaning displays amidst apparent chaos its numerous expansions within the linear framework of discourse, forming a complex and fascinating network the nature of which fractals enable if not to account for, at least to appreciate, that is to take in its form and determine its purpose. From the multiplicity of data to the perception of echoes the essence of being is thus unveiled thanks to the complementary approaches of linguists and specialists in translation studies.
