Abstract : Agronomy science is defined in France based on three objects: 'field', 'farmer' and 'territory'. My research works have been essentially conducted on the two last ones, in a double objective: (i) understanding farmers' management processes at farm level in interaction with their environment and (ii) supporting farmers in designing innovative management processes. These works have been included in frameworks combining local contexts, essentially in Africa and South America, with research-intervention methodology. These methods include stakeholders' surveys, modelling and stakeholders' support. I have studied farm management processes in diversified contexts (irrigated farming systems in the Senegal river delta; mixed crop-livestock farming systems in Western Africa; dairy farms in Morocco, Brazil and Peru). These works have aimed at showing how and why farmers' technical decisions are diverse compared to standardized recommendations made by Research and Development institutions. Based on these analysis I have proposed a generic representation of the 'farm' object, viewed as a set of coordination between decision levels and management functions, based on three sub-systems respectively biophysical, technical and decision. This knowldege has enabled me to design simulating tools dedicated to crop-livestock farm management. These tools are used to support farmers in reflecting on the future of their farms (better integration between crop and livestock activities). They are expected to be transferred to agricultural advisers. In the same time I have conducted research works on collective organizations in which farms are embedded, such as collective irrigation schemes and agro-food supply chains. I have aimed at understanding how farmers interact with scheme managers and industrials, and how better coordination processes between them could be designed. The works conducted with La Réunion and South Africa sugar industries led to the design of a simulation software called Magi®. Magi® enables to simulate the consequences of mill supply rules combined with capacities configuration along the chain on the total sugar production of a mill during one harvest season.
