Recherches sur les pratiques enseignantes en mathématiques : apports d'une intégration de diverses approches et perspectives

Abstract : Understanding teaching practices is the main objective of my research in mathematics education. Teachers are conceptualized as individual in working situations, who's activities therefore are not only directed towards the students, but are also concerned with meeting the requirements of the profession. Thus, my work takes into account both the challenge and the complexity of teachers' practices, as well as their understandings of the practice (but is of course not limited to what they deem to be relevant or important). I conducted several multidisciplinary researches involving teachers and other educational researchers, some of them specially focusing on problems of the profession identified by the practitioners themselves. We studied patterns in practices, their diversity and variability, which allowed us to uncover "work rules" in relation with professional constraints, leeways that teachers invest (in the classroom particularly), and opportunities for individual and collective professional development. These studies brought me to develop a framework in which teaching practices are, on one hand, considered as a system of interrelated professional activities (such as preparation, teaching, assessment, training and cooperation). On the other hand, teaching practices are interpreted according to three dimensions: institutional, social and personal. This framework leads on to new perspectives in mathematics education. For example, I am currently working on the help (positional) provided by teachers to their students; on difficulties often encountered by teachers in institutional transitions (from primary to secondary school or from secondary school to college); and on professional's mathematics training (e.g. with nurses in the context of drug doses calculation).
