Les ingénieurs-conseils dans l'architecture en France, 1945-1975 : réseaux et internationalisation du savoir technique

Abstract : This study considers the professional status and careers of a certain category of consulting engineer who worked in the architectural field in France between 1945 and 1975. These were foreign structural engineers who had not gained professional engineering status in France. Some were self-educated; others had gained diplomas in architecture; others had engineering diplomas from French universities but had decided to leave private or public sector employment to set up their own independent consultancies. Such engineers were not so rare in France, even a decade after the law regulating the professional status of the engineer in France had been passed in 1934. This study seeks to understand how these consulting engineers, practising on the margins of the established structural engineering profession, developed, taught and passed on their engineering skill and knowledge. By studying their professional and personal networks, this study reveals their various activities and how they practised their profession, as well as the nature of their relationships with architects. Building on the strengths of the different networks they set up within France, these consulting engineers went on to organise themselves on a European and even a world scale, in order to share and coordinate their research among their peers of all nationalities. The activities of these engineers - their ways of working, their networks and their ideas - led to a highly significant exchange of engineering knowledge and experience at both a national and an international level.
