Mythe littéraire et modernité: les réécritures de Robinson Crusoé dans les littératures française et anglaise, 1954-1986

Abstract : Robinson Crusoe is a modern literary myth for it elaborates in the beginning of the eighteenth century a new status of the subject: it builds up the mediating figure of an "I" which joins the social and the sacred disconnected by the disenchantment of the world. It functions as a myth proposing a narrative solution to an ideological dilemma. Appearing with the convergence of several themes of insular loneliness (observed since Sophocles' Philoctete) that Defoe's novel gathers for the first time, the Crusoe myth evolves in its versions of the second half of the XXth century. Five novels in the defined corpus deal with the theme of the quest of an "anywhere else" (texts by M. Tournier, G. Compere, A. Herve, J.G. Ballard, P. Theroux), four that of the insular reproduction of the outside world (W. Golding, M. Spark, J.M. Coetzee). While taking up the narrative scheme and the structural organisation of their hypotext, these robinsonades radically question the subject. Marked by the silence or the death of god, they show the breaking of the links to the other and to the sacred which characterizes the postmodern period. The "I" is then driven to disappear or to dissolve into a new identity. This is the paradox of the literary myth which lives on while penetrated by semantic contents opposed to those which gave rise to it.
