Etude et optimisation de nouvelles méthodes de construction de codes temps-espace en treillis pour des constellations PSK et QAM

Abstract : During the last years, wireless communication systems using multiple transmit and receive antennas called MIMO systems have been of great interest to improve the performance of data transmission. Many systems have been proposed to allocate the information on each transmit antenna. It was shown that MIMO systems using space-time trellis codes (STTCs) achieve both spatial diversity and coding gains. STTCs are based on trellis coded modulations for MIMO systems. Several criteria have been proposed to analyze the performance of STTCs. To find the best codes, an exhaustive search is necessary. Nevertheless, the search-time is very large, especially when the number of transmit antennas, the number of states of the encoder and/or the modulation complexity increase. The framework of this thesis is to develop several methods to design efficiently the best STTCs. In the case of $2^n$-PSK modulations, two methods to design the best STTCs are proposed. The first method concerns the generation of balanced STTCs because the best published codes are balanced. The second method called "coset partitioning" is an optimal method based on a coset approach of set partitioning. Thereby, the best 4-PSK STTCs with 2 to 8 transmit antennas and the best 8-PSK STTCs with 2 to 6 transmit antennas are proposed. Furthermore, a method based on the Euclidian distance decomposition is given to generate the best $2^{2n}$-QAM STTCs. Thus, the first 16-QAM STTCs with 3 and 4 transmit antennas and the first 64-QAM STTCs with 2 and 3 transmit antennas are given. Moreover, the performance of all the new codes is also evaluated by simulation in a fast and slow Rayleigh channel. Their performance is compared to the best previous published codes as long as they exist.
