Abstract : This report is a synthesis of ten years of researches in different domains of mechanics, and it is composed of three principal parts. The first one concerns the PhD researches on the optimisation of the hull of an offshore platform of TLP type. The two themes dealt with in the research are briefly presented: the simplification of the diffraction exact solutions for the computing wave forces and the procedure for the determination of the minimal weight hull's dimensions. The second part concerns a research in the field of non-linear mechanics: the use of the Asymptotic Numerical Method (ANM) for the detection of equilibrium bifurcation points of an elastic structure and for the following of the post-critical equilibrium branches. After a brief recall of the ANM, the theoretical formulation of the research is presented, along with some numerical examples and a discussion of the results. The third part concerns a series of researches in the domain of composite materials mechanics. The common feature of these researches is the use of the polar method in analysis, design and identification of laminates. After a detailed presentation of the polar method, the researches made in this field are divided into four main parts. Chapter 8 deals with uncoupled and quasi-homogeneous laminates, and namely it puts in evidence the discovery of quasi-trivial solutions and their properties. The design of partially or fully isotropic laminates is also concerned, as well as that of laminates composed of square symmetric plies. The feature of all these studies is the entirely theoretical approach, with the discovery of exact solutions for each one of the mentioned problems. Chapter 9 presents a new unified formulation, under the form of a classical problem of non-convex structural optimisation, of several laminate design problems, while chapter 10 deals with a new genetic algorithm, BIANCA, for laminates design and optimisation. Still in this domain, chapter 11 shows a theoretical and numerical study on the sensitivity of certain solutions to layer orientation errors. Chapter 12 concerns the discovery of a particular type of plane orthotropy, named R0-orthotropy, whose rather singular characteristics are put in light, along with the way to obtain such plies and its advantages. Finally, chapter 13 is about the use of the polar method in composite elastic and strength properties identification.
