Towards quantum degenerate Fermi mixtures: Photoassociation of weakly bound 6Li40K molecules

Abstract : This thesis reports on the construction of a new experimental apparatus aiming to study, at ultracold temperatures, a quantum degenerate gas mixture of two different atomic species of fermionic nature: 6Li and 40K. A detailed description of the design and implementation as well as a characterization of the apparatus is presented. We have realized a very large atom number dual-species magneto-optical trap and a magnetic transport of the two species over a large distance. We have used this atomic mixture to create, for the first time, excited heteronuclear 6Li40K* molecules by photoassociation. We have recorded and assigned photoassociation spectra for the most weakly bound states of seven excited molecular potentials and inferred the shape of the molecular potentials at long range. Our results pave the way for the production of ultracold bosonic ground-state 6Li40K molecules which exhibit a large intrinsic permanent electric dipole moment. Finally we have developed theoretically a novel method for the manipulation of quantum particles, which could be applied to polar 6Li40K molecules. This method consists in trapping the particles in a rapidly oscillating potential (ROP) and to induce an instantaneous change of phase of the trapping potential (a phase hop). We show that the particle's motion can thus be significantly manipulated in a controlled fashion. This method has found a first application for Bose-Einstein condensates trapped in a time-averaged orbiting potential.
