. Armstrong, Felsic volcaniclastic sediments within the Komati Fm. have a zircon U-Pb age of 3482±5 Ma A tuff in the basal part of the Kromberg Fm. has a mean U-Pb zircon age of 3416±5 Ma, whereas zircons from thin felsic ash layers within the, 1990.

M. Fm and 3. Mabyerly, The Weltevreden Fm. has not yet been dated directly, but it is older than the overlying Fig Tree Group, which has a minimum age of 3259±5 Ma (Byerly et al., 1996), and is correlated with the Mendon Fm. Within the Tjakastad Subgroup, komatiites and komatiitic basalts dominate the Sandspruit and Komati Fms., whereas the Theespruit Fm. consists mainly of interlayered komatiite flows and felsic tuffs together with thin bands of chert, metapelite, and sandstone (Viljoen and Viljoen The Mendon Fm The, of the Geluk Subgroup is also dominated by komatiites and komatiitic basalts, but is distinct from the Komati Fm. in that it contains abundant shallow-water interflow sediments, 1969.

W. Fm, is composed largely of thick layered flows and sills. Samples for this study came from three differentiated komatiite lava flows, namely SA501, KBA12, and SA564, approximately 65 m-, 25 m-, and 23 m-thick, respectively. The latter has a well-preserved upper chilled margin and is separated by a fault from the SA501 and KBA12 series flows. The SA501 and KBA12 flows are stacked, with the latter directly overlying SA501. The chilled contacts for these latter two flows were not found. The details of petrography and mineralogy of the studied komatiites are given in, 2003.
