EVOLUTION DE LA QUALITE DU LAIT LORS DE L'INSTALLATION D'UN ROBOT DE TRAITE : DESCRIPTION ET FACTEURS DE VARIATION

Abstract : The use of automatic milking system (AMS), an innovative tool in dairy herd management, is growing exponentially all around Europe. At the beginning of the 2000s, some studies underline its impact on the milk quality, mainly the free fatty acids concentration and the somatic cell counts. A retrospective study was carried out in 53 farms, describing the evolution of the milk quality after the AMS installation. The study focuses on the mammary health evolution and investigates the factors involved in the intramammary infections in the farms using AMS. Somatic cell counts, spores of anaerobes, total bacterial count and free fatty acids concentration are affected by the AMS installation (respectively 18 months, 12 months and at least 24 months for total bacterial count and free fatty acids concentration). The increase in somatic cell counts, about 100 000 cells/ml on average the first months, is mostly due to an increase of new intramammary infections. The incidence observed after the AMS installation is strongly linked to the prevalence of the intramammary infections observed within two years before the AMS installation. But, the persistence is poorly affected by the AMS installation. Management practices related to udder health implemented during the first 6 months after the AMS installation have generally few effects on intramammary infections. Farms where intramammary infections have been correctly managed for years have better results after AMS installation, with few intramammary infections.
