Etude de régulateurs linéaires et à découpage intégrés : Application à la téléphonie portable

Abstract : The autonomy of battery is a key point of portable Systems, such as mobile phone. First it dépends on the source of energy, and secondly in the way to manage the delivery of voltage and current as relating factors of the regulator and its yield. Of course, other criteria are compactness and cost. As a conséquence, thèse voltage regulators hâve to be integrated. The first chapter présent briefly three types of regulators. It also deals with constraints which are linked to external components and process technology. Justifying the utility to conceive the regulator in CMOS technology, the second chapter describes final design of a linear regulator (LDO, Low Drop-Out). It détails also its stability and short circuit protection. In this way, classical methods are presented in both cases. After presenting the limitations of thèse solutions on the application, a final solution is presented. It consists of a Miller , compensation depending on the output current to ensure its stability. It offers also a more powerful -< control of output intensity, in order to limit short circuit current. Simulations carried out during this i. design are validated by measurements on silicon. Switching power supplies can be used instead of the ; linear regulators. They offer the possibility to pull up the battery voltage, but require uneasily, J integratable inductive éléments. A static behavior study allows to evaluate the losses and the yield of \ the selected structure for the spécifications. The third chapter présents also stability analysis of this } solution, using a transfer function method. Finally, charge pumps are briefly presented. Also based on the switching principle, they are a compromise between the two latest principles and allow, with additional losses, to avoid the use of inductive components.
