Interactions post-WIMP et applications existantes sur une table interactive

Abstract : In this thesis, we focus on Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) with a new "form" of computer: the interactive tabletop, also called digital tabletop. These tables enable new computing usages: multi-touch tactile interaction, multi-users applications, etc. We observe than existing applications, designed for desktop computers, are pervasive in our daily life and work. They are essential to their users. Interactive tabletops, on the other hand, expose a physical aspect which is beyond the classical screen-keyboard-mouse of the desktop computer. It introduces new possibilities and new challenges for the applications' user interfaces design. On the other hand, the users' needs, for applications functionalities, stay the same. We propose different possibilities to insert an adaptation software layer between existing applications and the tabletop computer. We present five metrics and six technologies enabling existing applications to run in a tabletop environment. The existing applications user interfaces, and the UI toolkits they are using, are not suited for use on a large horizontal shared surface with multiple users around, each with its own point of view. We introduce the paper metaphor, inspired by the way one manipulate a sheet of (physical) paper. Users can then apply their knowledge of real world interactions to interactions with the digital artifacts. We think this transfer can improve interactive tabletops usability.
