Art et spatialités d'après l'œuvre in situ outdoors de Christo et Jeanne-Claude

Abstract : Art and spatialities in Christo and Jeanne-Claude's work of art. Textile object, masterpiece and work of art in the act of art and the aesthetic experience. As a part of the emerging discipline of art geography, this thesis is devoted to the artistic work of Christo and Jeanne-Claude which is known to the public by such masterpieces as The Pont-Neuf Wrapped or Surrounded Islands. This study bears upon the spatial dimension of the artistic production and upon the spatial dimension of the aesthetic response of a textile object in situ outdoors. In this respect, it relies on conceptual references to the theories of action such as they have engaged in geography for about ten years on the one hand, and, on the other hand, on the phenomenological approach which has become increasingly predominant in geography over the past thirty years. By rethinking the articulations btwenne textile object, masterpiece and work of art, it shows that the spatial dimension of the object-place of art, its physical and symbolical monumentality, cannot be conceptualized irrespective of the spatial dimension of the work of art, that is elaborated through the act of art. It also shwos that te textile object is utilized by the viewer in an aesthetic experience which is not only visuel but also tactile and located within the object-place of art. This relation between space and object utilization accounts for the transposition and geographic interpretation of a theoretical apparatus originally stemming from transitional psychoanalysis to explain the spatial dimension of the aesthetic experience of a masterpiece. This study is therefore deeply rooted in pluridisciplinarity: geography, aesthetics and psychoanalysis. This thesis, which lays the emphasis on the relation between fieldwork, image and action, inserts it into the field of experience and relates it with aesthetic experience, alos paves the way for a reflection about the relations between fieldwork and image in geography.
