Synthèse et caractérisation d'une nouvelle architecture de cathode pour pile à combustible fonctionnant aux températures intermédiaires (ITSFOC)

Abstract : This thesis highlights two important areas of research towards the improvement of cathode performance in a SOFC. 1) Mesostructured thin films of CGO were synthesized with the sol-gel process - utilizing block copolymers combined with the process of dip-coating. This type of film, with controlled porosity, was then incorporated into the cathode/electrolyte interface of a cell. The efficiency of these films was tested in fuel cell stacks showing a reduction in the ohmic losses within the cell and thus the improvement of the overall fuel cell's performance. 2) Additionally, towards the development of LSC-CGO composite cathodes, to decrease the operating temperature to 600, an innovative architecture for a ITSOFC was studied. We chose to develop this composite by infiltrating LSC nanoparticles into a porous CGO layer. A thick layer of CGO with both macro and mesopores was synthesized by infiltrating a CGO solution into a compact layer of PMMA spheres with respectively different size ranges. The hierarchical porous layer was obtained after calcination of the film. The macropores were produced by thermal decomposition of large PMMA particles and the mesopores were obtained through decomposition of smaller PMMA or any additional block copolymers. The synthesis of LSC nanoparticles in a polyol medium has been studied. Nanoparticles were obtained after heat treatment at high temperatures and a further study of the low temperature synthesis of smaller LSC nanoparticles is required to achieve the composite. This work highlights the efficiency of the infiltration process in the synthesis of hierarchical porous cathodes for SOFC.
